The Mexican Caribbean offers a diverse tapestry of experiences, appealing to a wide range of travellers. With over 900 kilometers of coastline, 19 archaeological sites, 8 national parks, and ample wildlife, birdwatching, and island-hopping opportunities, this region has something for everyone.

CANCÚN: WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

Cancún serves as the gateway to the Mexican Caribbean, and will likely be your first stop in the area. It is known for its numerous beachfront hotels, resorts, and beautiful stretches of sand. Cancun also offers plenty of variety when it comes to what to see and do. Six golf courses, 10 Blue Flag-certified beaches, and spas offering treatments infused with Mayan traditions and local ingredients exist in the area. There are several archeological sites to explore and it’s also worth stopping by the Museo Maya de Cancún. It houses one of the most important archeological collections of Mayan culture in all of Mexico.

COZUMEL, HOLBOX AND ISLA MUJERES: ISLAND TIME

If it’s a laid-back pace you’re after, whether for a day or a week, the islands of the Mexican Caribbean might be your answer. Cozumel, known as one of the best dive sites in the world, is the largest island in the region. It’s also home to several archaeological sites, including San Gervasio, the largest on the island and well worth visiting. Isla Mujeres is an ideal spot to base yourself for fun both in and on the water. From sport fishing and kayaking to windsurfing and speedboat rides. Holbox, located within the nature reserve of Yum Balam, is home to colourful wooden houses, beautiful beaches, and sandy streets. The best way to explore it is by foot or bicycle. No traffic here–just tranquility in nature.
