Sleeping under the stars is heavenly, but why not try something completely different and make your next stay an underwater hotel one?

While no fully submerged hotels exist quite yet (several are on their way), there are luxurious resorts that have incorporated one or more specially designed underwater rooms for guests to stay in and experience undersea life up close.

One Maldives ultra-luxury resort even features an underwater spa! Take a look at these unique stays to inspire your next underwater hotel adventure.

Atlantis, The Palm: Dubai

Atlantis, The Palm is one of the world’s most photographed and Instagrammed hotels due to its one-of-a-kind design and location on Palm Island. The Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark is the highlight. It’s home to one of the largest open-air marine habitats in the world featuring 65,000 marine animals in numerous lagoons.

See those marine animals from the comfort of your room with a stay in one of the property’s two underwater suites. They’re especially popular with celebrities and honeymooners. Elegantly appointed three-storey suites have floor-to-ceiling windows looking into the Ambassador Lagoon aquarium. Nod off as sharks glide past your bed. Luxury has no limits here with a private chef and personal butler available 24 hours a day. Guests also enjoy exclusive access to Aquaventure and other facilities, including private cabanas at the Royal Pool.

The Manta Resort: Pemba Island, Zanzibar

Safaris are the main draw for many when visiting Africa. But what about experiencing a sea safari from the comfort of your own underwater suite?

The aptly named underwater room is a very special guest suite at the ultra-luxury Manta Resort located on Pemba Island in Zanzibar. The journey to your room begins with a short wooden boat ride through the crystal clear waters of a marine conservation area to a three-level floating structure. Your private oasis features a rooftop lounge area, sea-level deck with bathroom and another lounge area.

The main event is a bedroom under the sea. Your bed is surrounded by panes of glass affording almost 360-degree views of the ocean around you. From here you’ll see abundant corals and shoals of tropical fish. Use your kayak, snorkel and fins provided for even more water-based fun.

Resorts World Sentosa: Singapore

Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore provides a rare opportunity for guests to experience the deep blue sea while receiving 5-star hotel service. 11 modern and spacious two-storey Ocean Suites provide an innovative and immersive marine-themed experience.

From your floor-to-ceiling acrylic panel bedroom windows observe an impressive display of 40,000 marine creatures representing over 70 species. Room lights dim automatically when the panel is raised for the ultimate viewing experience. On the upper suite level enjoy plush furnishings, outdoor patio complete with private Jacuzzi, freeform swimming pool and lounge chairs. Round the clock butler service completes the ultra-luxe experience.

Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland: Shanghai

Considered an engineering marvel incorporating cutting-edge technology and construction design, the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland is the world’s first 5-star hotel built inside an underground, water-filled quarry. Rather than building up to the sky, the 18-storey property features two above-ground floors, with the remaining storeys stretching 88 meters below ground.

There are 336 luxury rooms and suites, including the distinctive underwater suites, which feature an in-room aquarium filled with a bounty of fish species. The modern, luxurious underwater loft gives guests two fantastic observation and comfort levels. The landing deck at water level houses the outdoor terrace and bedroom. You’ll see a continuous parade of fish in the underwater living room inside a turquoise aquarium. Lauded for its sustainability and minimal environmental footprint, for hotel guests it’s a luxurious, comfort-driven dive into an underwater world.

Huvafen Fushi: Maldives

Welcome to the world’s first underwater spa at one of the world’s most luxurious resorts: Huvafen Fushi Maldives. There are no underwater guest rooms here. But you are never far from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean or your own private plunge pool.

You can still get your underwater fix however, at the property’s soothing spa. It features two underwater couple’s treatment rooms with panoramic reef views and design inspired by the sea.

Watch schools of brightly-hued fish swim by during your treatment or afterwards in the underwater relaxation area. Wherever you look, sea life awaits. Treatments range from massages and facials to body scrubs and sun repair. In addition to the underwater spa sanctuaries, there are two couple’s and four single treatment rooms overwater.
